Guarding April 20, 2010

Filed under: Inspiration — mel @ 5:44 am

This morning, I re-visited one of my favourite Bible verses that I always used to get on Pass-it-on cards:
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” – Phil 4:6-7

The word “guard” stood out in particular for me because my mind can be a messy, chaotic place with so many thoughts and ideas battling against each other, resulting in a bloodbath of unnecessary futility.

φρουρέω (phroureō – will guard)
1) to guard, protect by a military guard, either to prevent hostile invasion, or to keep the inhabitants of a besieged city from flight

2) metaph.
– under the control of the Mosaic law, that he might not escape from its power
– to protect by guarding, to keep
– by watching and guarding to preserve one for the attainment of something

And I also think it’s cool that while this type of guarding alludes to a spiritual battle of sorts, it only comes about through peace. How’s that for a pleasant paradox?
